The image opens with a city street at night. There is a bank logo on the building. A flash sparks into flames through the window, as two figures emerge. One strolls off screen, almost casually. The building burns and luckily, nobody is injured. Later, when the motive is revealed, the world is told the firebombing was a protest against the Vancouver Olympics.

This is an apt summary of the Chris Walter novel Wrong, released in 2009 – before the 2010 Olympic Games. Those who have read the book agree - the May 18 firebombing of a Glebe bank branch rings eerily similar to its plotline.

“I was wondering if anyone would notice that,” Walter wrote in an e-mail. He and his girlfriend had certainly noted the similarities in the newscasts from Ottawa to Vancouver, where they live.

The cause, the location style, the execution and the statement – all sound like a screenplay based on the book. The security footage from across Bank Street could be used for the movie version of Wrong, if there ever were to be one.

The fictional Vancouver duo in the novel refer to themselves as the DEAC, the Downtown Eastside Action Committee.

In reality, the protesters are calling themselves Direct Action in Ottawa.

In the novel, two men bomb the countdown clock, a bank and a fast-food franchise. The book is based on the turmoil that gripped the Lower Eastside due to the 2010 Olympic Games, which took place in Vancouver.

This is similar to what happened recently in Ottawa, when two males were videotaped “firebombing” a Royal Bank, in protest to the Olympics held three months ago.

In an interview well before the incident and the Games, Walter made it clear he does not support violent acts like the ones described in his book.

The truth may well end up being stranger than fiction, as authorities scramble for information about the Ottawa firebombing. Security appears to be heightened at area Royal Bank branches, yet a security guard from Commissionaires Ottawa, a private security service, said, "we have always been posted here."

Chris Walter is the author and publisher of 15 novels. His latest novel, Argh Fuck Kill, the Story of the Dayglo Abortions is due to be released in one week.
